Caregiver burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion experienced by individuals who provide ongoing care and support to someone in need.

As per AARP, approximately 53 million Americans (in 2022) serve as unpaid caregivers, dedicating themselves to providing round-the-clock care to family members, neighbors, or friends in need. They spend almost around $7000 per year on out-of-pocket expenses related to caregiving, as estimated by AARP.

The economic value of unpaid caregiving in the United States exceeds $470 billion, as estimated by the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP. Inadequate caregiver support contributes to higher healthcare costs, with caregiver stress and depression leading to an additional $9.1 billion in healthcare costs. annually, according to the AARP Public Policy Insititute.

Caregiving responsibilities impact family members' ability to participate in the workforce, with 42% of caregivers reducing their work hours, 10% taking a leave of absence, and 9% quitting their jobs entirely, as found by the Center for Work-Life Policy.

This often leads to caregiver burnout, as many of these caregivers lack professional training, struggle with understanding their roles and expectations, and frequently neglect self-care.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, data indicates a decline in the health and well-being of caregivers, emphasizing the urgent need for solutions to address caregiver burnout. According to Frontiers, 23% of caregivers reported COVID-19 related financial impacts. Additionally, 59% of caregivers reported decreased social support during the pandemic. This phenomenon not only detrimentally affects the caregiver but also impacts the patient's environment and raises concerns for the patient's family.

Urgency

The urgency of addressing these challenges cannot be overstated. The societal, emotional, and environmental implications of not providing adequate support for caregivers and optimizing patient care are profound. Without intervention, caregiver burnout can lead to decreased quality of care, increased healthcare costs, and overall diminished well-being for both patients and caregivers.                                                                                                                                              â€‹
